The Canberra/Broulee Nippers program responds to an alarming statistic from the NSW South Coast that reports that 84% of all surf rescues involve ACT residents. The Nippers program seeks to develop surf lifesaving skills of young Canberrans, its innovative approach making use of standard pool facilities to apply these to surf lifesaving training and education, allowing participants to gain formal Surf Lifesaving accreditation. The program enters its second year this summer, having grown from 80 participants to over 130, and was a finalist in the 2017 Surf Lifesaving Awards for Excellence 2017.
