Alan Tongue

Rugby League Full Member Inducted: 2019 As a player with the Canberra Raiders Alan Tongue led by example, always seeking to get the most from himself and from those around him. Alan became one of the National Rugby League’s most respected professionals and captains. Hailing originally from Tamworth, Alan played 11 seasons with the Raiders. He made his debut in 2000, winning Rookie of the Year, before going on to play 220 matches in the lime green. He scored 31 tries and was awarded Player of the Year honours in 2006 and the Dally M Lock of the Year in 2008. In his characteristic head gear, Alan was a tackling machine, known for his toughness, leadership and durability. He was named in the Prime Minister’s XIII in 2008 and played for Country Origin in 2009. Playing during a largely lean on-field period, Alan established himself as a mainstay of the Raiders and its community conscience, lending his support to a range of charities and community programs. Off the field, he helped establish a lasting legacy within the club, seeking to value good character as much as sheer talent, and wanting to fully engage within the community the Raiders proudly represent. This strong community engagement continued following his retirement in 2011, Alan immersing himself in work with local youth at risk through his Aspire program, while also being an ambassador and program deliverer in the Voice Against Violence program. Alan Tongue was named the ACT Australian of the Year for 2017.
