Chris Nunn OAM

Chris Nunn, OAM has lived in Canberra for over twenty-five years. After a successful career in athletics where he won national championship medals (Men’s 110m hurdles and decathlon) and which saw him represent Australia at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, Chris retired from competitive athletics in 1989 to concentrate on coaching. He has since amassed more than 25 years of administrative and coaching experience in high performance sport. During his career, Chris has been either the coach or head coach of the Australian athletics team at the Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney Paralympics. Under his guidance and mentoring, the athletics team at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games won 35 gold, 15 silver and 16 bronze medals. In 2000, Chris was appointed Head Coach of the Australian Institute of Sport Athletics program. His appointment resulted in the integration of athletes with a disability into the AIS Athletics program. Chris was the Australian Paralympic Committee’s High Performance Manager during the Beijing and London Paralympic Games (2008 and 2012), and was appointed the Chef de Mission for the Paralympic team at the Sochi Winter Paralympics in 2014. Chris has received numerous awards for coaching, including the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2002 for his contribution to disability sport. He also served as Chairman of the Athletics Committee of the International Sports Organisation for the Disabled from 1994 to 1996. Chris remains connected to his local community in a variety of ways. In 2004, he established a King’s Swim School in Macgregor and remains actively involved in junior sport development as a coach at Ginninderra Little Athletics Club and through his role as Chair of ACT School Sport Council.
