Garry Lawless is a trailblazer for Touch Football in the ACT and in Australia. He began competing for the ACT in National Championships events in 1982 and was still participating 30 years later.
Garry represented Australia at five World Cups, having 41 World Cup caps and 12 Test match caps to his credit. His first Trans-Tasman game was in the ‘inaugural’ test of the new era in 1985 in Melbourne where he scored the first touchdown in a 4-1 victory over the Kiwi’s. He finished his playing career in 2011 as part of the Australian Men’s 50’s team in the Super Trans-Tasman Series held in Auckland New Zealand.
He is revered as one of Australia’s best ever players, having been inducted into the Touch Football Australia Hall of Fame in 2007.
A master tactician, Garry was renowned for his toughness, skill level, and intelligence in both attack and defence. As both a player and administrator Garry played a pivotal role in raising the profile and standard of touch football in the ACT during the 80’s and 90’s.
