Lisa Llorens OAM

Lisa Llorens was a world-class Paralympic athlete, excelling in high jump, long jump and sprinting. After a disabled meet at the AIS in 1993 in which she set a world record for intellectually disabled women in the High Jump (1.45m), Lisa began training at the Institute under the guidance of Scott Goodman, Chris Nunn and later, Brett Jones. She competed at the IPC Athletics World Championships in 1994 in Berlin, winning silver in both long jump and the 200m at the age of 16. She competed at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, where she won gold and bronze, receiving the Order of Australia Medal for this achievement. In 1997, Lisa was further recognised for her achievements when she was awarded the ACT Female Sportstar of the Year Award and Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Award, while also winning each event in which she entered at the National Championships. In 1998, Lisa continued her success at the world championships in Birmingham by winning gold in the 100m, high jump and long jump. She took part in the Paralympic World Cup in 1998, where she won gold in the 100m, high jump and long jump. From 1998 to 2002, Lisa held an Australian Institute of Sport Athletes with a Disability athletics scholarship. During this time, Lisa represented Australia at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, carrying the Paralympic Torch into the Stadium and won 3 gold medals in the 200m, high jump, and long jump, and a silver in the 100m. During this campaign she broke the long jump world record three times. Lisa retired in 2004 for several reasons including a decision by the International Paralympic Committee to remove events for intellectually disabled athletes from the Athens Paralympic Games.
