The Canberra $75K ATP Challenger event was held from the 9-16 of January, 2016. The tournament was only announced in November 2015 after the success of the Canberra International. A reduction in the qualifying draws at the ATP events in Sydney and Auckland, meant that players within the top 100 were going to be unable to secure entry into an event prior to the Australian Open. As a result, a $75,000 ATP Challenger event was added to the tournament calendar. Due to the Canberra Tennis Centre and Tennis ACT’s capacity to host events, Canberra was identified as a suitable venue. The event attracted a quality international field with ten top 100 players featuring at the tournament. Capacity crowds enjoyed a stellar field with10 of the top players in the world choosing Canberra as their warm-up event for the Australian Open. Streamed live around the world and with people flying in from all over the world the event provided an estimated $580,000 injection into the local economy. Hailed a success by the players and the ATP, the one off event has returned to Canberra in 2017.
